Antoine Blanchard
Post-Impressionist painter · France
Antoine Blanchard, the professional name of French painter Marcel Masson, is known for lively, partly imagined views of the streets of Paris as they looked at the end of the 19th century. Working from images of the city he collected from the 1890s, he painted its boulevards, carriages and glowing lights in vivid color with short, expressive brushstrokes.
His Paris includes landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Moulin Rouge and the Porte St. Denis on the Grands Boulevards. Notre-Dame was a lasting fascination, and he painted the cathedral again and again, in changing weather and light and from many vantage points.
